Acre’s World Cup “Tourney”
Posted on 14 July 2014 by Michael
With the 24 Peaks Great Ormond Street Charitable Challenge looming, and the arrival of the World Cup in Brazil…I felt the timing was a perfect recipe to create something fun, interactive and challenging. No, we didn’t have another bake-off but what we did do is compete against one another by predicting the final results of the World Cup from the Group Stage through to the Final result, with Germany eventually beating Argentina in spectacular fashion.
In order to make the challenge “un-complicated”, the competition was split into two sections and descriptive words such as “bracket” and “tourney” were used liberally…Americanisms which clearly have not yet found their way across the pond! However, despite a bit of initial confusion, the Group Stage predictions were cast, eventually setting up a thrilling “knock-out” stage tournament which involved most if not all of Acre’s staff. Double points were given for each correct prediction, every day a game was played, the up-to-date results provided for a very exciting and unpredictable ending. The eventual tournament victors were any one’s guess until the concluding whistle!
In the end, Brazil hosted an amazing and certainly memorable World Cup…Germany became the champions and three lucky individuals within Acre were crowned “Tourney winners.”
In total, the two-week “tourney” raised £135 for Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and placed us one step closer to our 24 Peaks goal. As most of you are aware, a team from Acre will take on one of the toughest outdoor challenges in the UK this September as part of its fundraising drive for GOSH. The “Tourney” is one of Acre’s many fundraising events which will help us reach our target of £8,000. We have just enjoyed the Great Acre Clothes Swap, and next on the summer agenda is a Sustainable Wine & Nibbles Tasting Event at Fairly Square Fairtrade Café.
